Manassas HS students name student with disability homecoming king


MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- Students at Osbourn High School in Manassas celebrated a student with an intellectual disability during homecoming.

The students named Alex Sanchez and Octavia Samuel homecoming king and queen. Alex has an intellectual disability, but Octavia says the students could not have made a better choice.

"I think it's awesome, I'm really happy he won," Octavia said. "I think he deserves it, he really does. He always has a smile on his face. It brightens up my day because I see him every day."

No surprise, Alex is beloved by all the students, teachers and staff at Osbourn. ​

11-year-old boy killed in Va. dirt bike crash


MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- An 11-year-old is dead after losing control of a dirt bike and crashing into a tree in Manassas Sunday afternoon, Prince William County police said.

The crash happened in the 8400 block of Cabin Branch Ct. in Manassas around 1:27 p.m, police stated. Colby Thomas Smith, 11, of Manassas was riding a 2007 CR85 Honda dirt bike with two other people on private property along a dirt track in a wooded area.

Police said the investigation shows that Smith, who was wearing a helmet at the time, lost control of the bike and hit a tree.

He was taken to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

MISSING: 53-year-old Manassas woman


MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- Police need your help locating a missing and endangered 53-year-old woman from Manassas.

Penny Laurel Wolfe was last seen Tuesday around noon in the 9500 block of Lafayette Avenue in Manassas. Police say she may be in need of assistance.

Wolfe is describe by police as a 5'2" white female, 110 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes.

Anyone locating Ms. Wolfe or with information regarding her whereabouts is asked to contact the Prince William County Police Department at (703) 792-6500.

Officer involved shooting in Manassas found justified


MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- An officer-involved shooting by a Prince William County police officer in Manassas was found to be justified, according to an investigation by county police.

The investigation found that the officer shot a man while he was running towards him with a crowbar raised in a threatening manner.

The shooting happened on September 23 at around 2:11 p.m. after officers were responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 7600 block of Lake Drive in Manassas. The homeowner reported she saw an unknown man hiding in a bush near the deck on her property, police said. The man fled after a verbal encounter with the homeowner.

Animal shelter reopens after virus in Manassas


MANASSAS, Va. (WUSA9) -- The Prince William County animal shelter re-opened Sunday after a virus forced the shelter to close its doors.

On Sunday, the shelter celebrated a fresh bill of health after a cat virus last week. WUSA9's Surae Chinn reported that 73 cats had to be put-down due to the virus.

The shelter has been opened at the same facility for 40 years. The shelter is need of a larger facility due to overcrowding.
